Our History
Our Roots
Born from a deep commitment to the Kauaʻi community, Honu Mana began with a simple but powerful purpose: to walk alongside survivors of domestic violence and people facing economic hardship and partnering with them as they rebuild their lives after crisis. From our earliest days, we have focused on practical support, meaningful collaborations, and opportunities that create impactful, lasting stability and independence.
Programs that Empower
In 2016, we launched Healthy Money Choices, a financial literacy program that teaches budgeting, credit repair, debt management, and saving strategies. In 2021, we created the Ho’omanu Impact Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic to remove barriers to housing and economic independence, covering essentials like education, certifications, childcare, and transportation. Since launching Honu Mana, both programs have since expanded to serve the entire Kauaʻi community through partnerships with local agencies.
The Wiwoʻole Bridge Housing Program
In 2023, after a five-year search with the YWCA of Kauaʻi, we helped bring forward and secure a property to house survivors who had timed out of shelter, leasing it to the YWCA with an option to purchase at cost. Six months of volunteer renovation management allowed tenants to move in early and generate rental income. In late 2024, with the help of a generous $1.5 million grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Kauaʻi Community Fund, the YWCA purchased the property, securing it as dedicated housing for the foreseeable future. We remain actively involved by providing financial literacy and other support to its residents as they transition into stable housing and independence.
Our Commitment Today
Today, Honu Mana builds on those beginnings by looking forward and expanding partnerships, strengthening programs, while reaching communities across Kaua’i. Our focus is on opening doors to long-term stability and independence. With ho’omanu “perseverance” , wiwo’ole “courage”, and aloha, we remain committed to a future where every person has the chance to thrive.
